Urgent Care Q&A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care provides immediate, outpatient medical services for the treatment of non-life-threatening acute and chronic illnesses and injuries. Urgent care does not replace your primary care but is a useful option if you are sick or injured outside of your regular well visits or for when you can’t wait for the next available appointment.

What health conditions can urgent care treat?

Dr. Milligan offers urgent care to treat several health concerns, including:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Headache or earache
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sore throat
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lacerations and broken bones
  • COVID-19

Through a concierge medicine membership, you can also have access to medical care from anywhere at any time. It’s particularly beneficial if you’re traveling and require guidance from Dr. Milligan.

What should I expect during an urgent care visit?

During your urgent care visit, Dr. Milligan asks detailed questions about your medical needs and medication regimen. He also reviews your personal medical history and conducts a physical exam.

If you suspect that you or your child has COVID-19 or strep throat, Dr. Milligan offers treatment recommendations to help you feel better.

After a physical exam, Dr. Milligan may order X-rays, an ultrasound, urinalysis, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests. Then, he treats all urgent needs, including cleaning and closing any open wounds. If needed, prescription medications are sent to your pharmacy of choice.

When should I visit an emergency room?

Some medical conditions can’t be treated in an urgent care or primary care setting, and require the emergency room (ER).

Symptoms better evaluated in the emergency room include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Serious burns
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Slurred speech
  • Head injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
  • Concussions
  • Seizures

If you experience a medical problem that isn’t severe enough to require the emergency room but can’t wait for an appointment, visit Dr. Milligan at his office in Guntersville, Alabama.
